We now know the claimed mileage of all the six powertrain options that will be on offer with the Seltos

  • Kia Seltos to be offered with three BS6 engines: 1.4-litre turbo-petrol, 1.5-litre petrol and diesel.
  • All three will be offered with a 6-speed manual while the automatic options vary for each.
  • Diesel is the most efficient in both manual and automatic guise.
  • Both petrol-AT claim to be slightly more frugal than their respective manual transmission options.
  • 1.5-litre petrol more efficient than 1.4-litre turbo-petrol, but not by much.
  • More Seltos details coming soon with launch on 22 August 2019.

The final production-spec details of the upcoming Kia Seltos are about to be revealed with the launch scheduled for 22 August 2019. We already knew what powertrain options are on offer but now we also know their claimed mileage figures.

Kia will be offering the Seltos compact SUV with three BS6 engines, each mated to a 6-speed manual and its own type of automatic transmission. Here are the engine details and claimed efficiency figures for each:

Engine 1.4-litre turbo-petrol 1.5-litre petrol 1.5-litre diesel
Transmission Options 6-speed MT/ 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission) 6-speed MT/ CVT 6-speed MT/ 6-speed AT
Power 140PS 115PS 115
Torque 242Nm 144Nm 250Nm
Mileage 16.1kmpl/ 16.5kmpl (DCT) 16.5kmpl/ 16.8kmpl (CVT) 21kmpl/ 18kmpl (AT)

It is surprising to note that in the case of the petrol engines, the automatic variants claim to be more fuel efficient than the manual transmission options. The difference is small but still makes the pricier automatic variants more desirable.

However in the case of the diesel engine, the manual variant is notably more frugal than the automatic variant. In both forms, the diesel is more efficient than the petrol engines.

Overall, the naturally-aspirated petrol engine is more fuel efficient than the turbo-charged petrol engine. Meanwhile, the diesel unit claims to cover at least 1.2km more per litre with the 6-speed automatic, and it can do another 3km per litre with the 6-speed manual.

At launch, these will be the only BS6 compliant engines in the compact SUV segment. The Kia Seltos will be offered in two broad trims – Tech Line and GT Line – the latter will be the only choice with the turbocharged petrol powertrains.

Kia is expected to price the Seltos between Rs 10 lakh to 16 lakh at launch. It will be going up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Renault Captur, Nissan Kicks and Renault Duster. The Seltos’ higher pricing will bring its top variants in contention with larger 5-seater SUVs like the Tata Harrier and MG Hector as well.
